What exactly is bubble tea?

Bubble tea — also called boba — is a sweet, chilled tea drink with chewy "bubbles" waiting at the bottom of the cup. It started as a Taiwanese tea-shop invention in the 1980s and is now one of the most-ordered drinks at cafés worldwide — usually ₹150–250 a cup for a single serving. Shake it, sip it through a wide straw, and get a burst of flavour in every mouthful.

Iced milk tea in hand

The base

Milk tea or fruit tea — matcha, chai, taro, or something fruity like Blue Hawaii.

Bowl of chewy tapioca pearls

The chew

Soft tapioca pearls or juice-filled popping boba — the "bubbles" that give bubble tea its name.

Bubble tea served over ice with a wide straw

The finish

Poured over ice and sipped through a wide straw made for scooping up the chew as you go.

Before you order — quick answers

Q.Hot or iced?

Traditionally served cold and shaken over ice, but every BTS kit works hot too — just skip the ice and stir the pearls in warm.

Q.What are the pearls made of?

Soft, chewy tapioca pearls made from cassava starch, or popping boba that bursts with real fruit juice — both naturally gluten-free.

Q.How sweet is it?

Entirely up to you. The syrup is added by the glass, so make it bakery-sweet or barely-there — there's no fixed recipe to follow.

Q.Is there caffeine?

A little, from the tea base — similar to a regular cup of tea and well under a cup of coffee. Good for an afternoon lift without the jitters.

That's exactly what's inside every BTS kit, at a fraction of café price — just add water or milk. See the six flavours ↓
